“Yes, this dress DOES make your butt look bigger. No, you shouldn’t have spent the last $50 on a useless pair of shoes. What are you going to eat for the rest of the week? And by the way, a bit of parsley is stuck between your teeth...”
We’ve all been there. There is always at least one friend who speaks their mind with no mercy. While sometimes it may seem borderline insulting, there are actually many benefits of having a no-sugar-coater as a friend! Not convinced and about to lose the nerve and delete their number? Consider these 5 benefits of having a brutally honest friend!
No talking behind your back. Why would someone waste time spreading rumors and talking behind your back, if they have no problem discussing literally anything face to face? If there is a problem, or you’ve done something that seriously bothers them, rest assured you’ll be the first one to know. Saves a lot of misunderstanding, doesn’t it?
Helpful advice. If you are in need of helpful feedback (not to be confused with self-validation), you can always count on this kind of people’s honesty. If you are going shopping together, they will never approve an outfit that doesn’t match your skin tone or fails to compliment your curves, no matter how much you liked it on a mannequin and how much you wish it looked the same on you. If your straightforward friend thinks you are stuck in an abusive relationship with a wrong person, they won’t dance around it. Don’t immediately get defensive, try to actually listen – your friend may very well be right, after all…
A new perspective. If your friend doesn’t have a policy of not sharing certain thoughts, which some people would much prefer to hide, you can expect them to give you a whole new perspective on rather bothersome things! “Your fiancée bailed 2 months after engagement? Well, that ring was pretty expensive, why don’t you sell it on eBay?” See? Most people wouldn’t even raise this in conversation in attempt not hurt your feelings!
No embarrassing diplomatic conflicts. Unlike most people out there, your brutally honest friend won’t immediately change their opinion based on the surroundings and social circle, leaving you in an awkward situation of suddenly being alienated, although you agreed upon the same thing just 5 minutes ago! They will stick to their views no matter what – for sure.
Learn from them. An ability to be honest doesn’t come easy to many and requires serious effort. Sometimes we worry so much about our image in the society that we choose to sugarcoat the truth and pretend. This leads to a lot of anxiety and makes things so complicated – it’s not easy to maintain this alternate reality after all! As noted by Abraham Lincoln, “No man has a good enough memory to make a successful liar”. Honesty leads to simplicity, which creates peace. Observe your honest friends and learn from them, and maybe it will make you a bit happier!
